Laptops, degrees and careers

An intelligent heart acquires knowledge, and the ear of the wise seeks knowledge.
Proverbs 18:15

Getting a bright student through school is only half the job. Scholarships, laptops, career counselling and small-enterprise support carry them the rest of the way.

A talented student from a poor family hits a wall at the end of school, not the start of it. The fees for a degree are out of reach, the laptop that the coursework assumes is out of reach, and nobody in the family has ever navigated a university application. The talent does not go anywhere — it just stops.

Scholarships fund graduate and postgraduate study for students with the ability and none of the means. More than 300 laptops have been given to students and young people, which in practice is the difference between studying a subject and only reading about it — several recipients have taught themselves design and development and now freelance for a living.

Career counselling seminars bring students, parents and mentors into one room to make the choice concrete rather than theoretical. And small-enterprise support — training, resources and micro-finance — backs local business owners who want to build something that employs other people.
